Have you ever wondered what to do with an old or unused blanket that is lying around in your closet? Do you want to turn it into something useful and fashionable that you can wear in the cold season? If you answered yes to these questions, then this post is for you. In this post, I will show you how to refashion a blanket into a warm and cozy coat with hood, using a free PDF pattern and a video tutorial that I have created for you.

Why refashion a blanket into a coat?

 

Refashioning a blanket into a coat is a great way to upcycle and reuse something that you already have, and save money and resources. You can also create a unique and personalized coat that reflects your style and preference. And of course, you can enjoy the comfort and warmth of a blanket in a coat form.

 

What do you need to refashion a blanket into a coat?

To refashion a blanket into a coat, you will need the following materials and tools:

• A blanket of your choice. You can use any type of blanket, such as fleece, wool, cotton, or flannel. Just make sure that it is big enough to cover your body and that it is not too thick or stiff to sew.
• A free PDF pattern that I have designed for you. The pattern comes in five sizes, from XS to XL, and it is easy to print and assemble. You can download the pattern from the video description or from my blog.
• You can also visit my post here with video tutorial on how to self draft perfect pattern for you dream winter coat.
• A sewing machine and basic sewing tools, such as scissors, pins, needles, thread, and measuring tape.
• A hood and pockets. You can use the hood and pockets from the pattern, or you can use your own hood and pockets from another garment or pattern. You can also skip the hood and pockets if you prefer a simpler coat. • Optional: A lining fabric. You can add a lining fabric to your coat if you want to make it more durable and comfortable. You can use any lightweight fabric, such as cotton, polyester, or satin. You can also use the same fabric as the blanket for the lining, if you have enough.

How to refashion a blanket into a coat?

To refashion a blanket into a coat, you will need to follow these steps:

• Step 1: Prepare the blanket. Wash and iron the blanket if needed. Lay the blanket flat on a large surface and cut off any fringes, edges, or labels that might interfere with the sewing.
• Step 2: Prepare the pattern. Print and assemble the pattern according to the instructions. Cut out the pattern pieces and choose the size that fits you best. You can also adjust the pattern to your measurements, if needed. Check out my post on how to print and assemble my  free pdf patterns  and how to cut out my free pdf patterns.
• Step 3: Cut the fabric. Place the pattern pieces on the blanket and pin them in place. Cut out the fabric pieces, leaving a 1.5 cm seam allowance around each piece. You will need to cut two front pieces, one back piece, two sleeve pieces, and one hood piece. If you are adding pockets, you will also need to cut two pocket pieces. If you are adding a lining, you will need to cut the same pieces from the lining fabric, except for the hood and the pockets.
• Step 4: Sew the coat. Follow the video tutorial that I have made for you, where I will show you how to sew the coat step by step. You will learn how to sew the shoulder seams, the side seams, the sleeves, the hood, and the pockets. You will also learn how to sew single welt pockets, which are very handy and elegant. You will also learn how to add a lining, if you are using one. You will also get photos and diagrams to guide you through each step.
• Step 5: Finish the coat. Trim the excess fabric and press the seams. Turn the coat right side out and try it on. Make any adjustments if needed. You can also add buttons, snaps, zippers, or belts to your coat, if you like. And voila, you have just refashioned a blanket into a warm and cozy coat with hood.

DIY Coat Pattern: Learn to Create Your Own Patterns with This Easy Tutorial

 

Hello ,  I have an exciting video for you that will teach you how to self drafting pattern for basic coat. In this video, you will learn how to measure yourself, how to draft your pattern, and how to sew your coat. You will also learn how to make four different types of collars for your coat: basic, simple, round, and strength. And as a bonus, I will also give you for free 6 french curved rulers for pattern making. This video is perfect for beginners who want to create their own custom coat.

 

Self drafting pattern is a skill that allows you to create your own custom patterns for sewing garments. It can be very rewarding and fun, but it also requires some basic tools and knowledge. One of the most important steps in self drafting pattern is measuring yourself correctly. Measuring yourself is important because it will help you to draft patterns that fit your body shape and size. If you measure yourself incorrectly, your patterns will not fit well, and your garments will look unflattering and uncomfortable. Measuring yourself is also important because it will help you to adjust existing patterns to your measurements, or to compare your measurements with standard size charts.

In this video, I will show you how to measure yourself for self drafting pattern, and what measurements you need to take. You will need a measuring tape, a pencil and a paper, a mirror, and a friend or a helper. You will need to take the following measurements for self drafting pattern, :

• The waist: Measure around your natural waistline, where your belly button is.
• The shoulders: Measure across your back from one shoulder tip to the other.
• The bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms.
• The neck: Measure around your neck, where your collar would sit.
• The armhole: Measure around your arm, from the shoulder tip to the armpit.
• The sleeve length: Measure from the shoulder tip to the wrist, with your arm slightly bent.
• The wrist: Measure around your wrist, where your cuff would sit.
• The hips: Measure around the widest part of your hips, below your waist.

You can see in the pictures below how to measure yourself correctly. Make sure the measuring tape is not too tight or too loose.

Once you have your measurements, you can start drafting your pattern. You will need a large piece of paper, big enough to fit your coat. You can use newspaper, wrapping paper, or any other paper you have. You will also need a french curve ruler and an L square ruler. A french curve ruler is a curved ruler that is very useful for pattern making. You can use it to draw smooth curves for necklines, armholes, and sleeve caps. An L square ruler is a ruler that has a right angle at one end. You can use it to square your work, measure 90 degree angles, and draw straight lines. It is ideal for pattern drafting, cutting, and measuring.

In this video, I will show you how to draft your pattern for a basic coat, and how to make four different types of collars for your coat: basic, simple, round, and strength. Each collar has a different shape and style. You can choose the one that suits your preference and personality. You can see in the pictures below how to draft your pattern and how to make the collars.

After you have drafted your pattern, you can cut your fabric according to your pattern pieces. Make sure you add 1 cm seam allowance to all edges.

This is a type of pocket that has one strip of fabric on the outside, creating a slit opening. It looks very neat and professional, and it’s not as hard as you might think.

A single welt pocket is a great skill to have if you want to add some flair and functionality to your garments. You can sew this pocket to jackets, coats, pants, or any other garment that you like. It will give your clothes a more polished and sophisticated look, and it will also provide you with some extra storage space.

In this video, I will show you the steps to make a single welt pocket, from marking and cutting the pocket opening, to sewing and turning the welt strip, to attaching and finishing the pocket bag. You will need some fabric, fusible interfacing, a fabric pen, scissors, an iron, a seam ripper, a ruler, and sewing pins. You will also need some lining fabric, which can be cotton, 100% Bemberg viscose, 60% acetate 40% viscose, 97% cotton 3% elastane, or 100% acetate.

This video is suitable for intermediate sewers who have some experience with sewing pockets. If you are a beginner, you can still give it a try, but make sure to follow the instructions carefully and practice on some scrap fabric first. I promise you, once you master this pocket, you will be able to create amazing garments that will impress everyone.
